Another character of mine, Tokiaru, has a small family. Him, his mate, and some children. But he doesn't wish to join a pack or create a pack. His family is to small anyways... But I was thinking, hey, why can't us small families have dens of our own? Maybe not big pack dens, but perhaps smaller ones. Even if they don't have as much in it, it's better then roaming around or staying in public dens all the time. Maybe it could only fit around 5 people, but hey, at least it's a place you can call home.

Well, in reality, a pack of wolves is actually really only consisting of a breeding pair and their young, so it would make sense for them to be able to apply for a den the same as anyone else. I second this argument.

I think small dens are a great idea

I, too, think this is a good idea.
Though the only problem is that a small family could not easily defend a den as only the sire would be truly able to handle the situation especially if the female has recently given birth and/or is nursing. Plus she would have to defend the pups.
So say some saber or something wandered in and was wanting to claim the den? Do you think a small family could fight off a full grown saber? Maybe. But it's a longshot if only two of them are at adulthood.
This is my only concern. I do think it's a good idea. Also a few packs inhabit a den and don't have an application in to protect the den. Besides, dens do not belong to one single pack they are defended by them so that anyone could fight for them. So you could possibly take up shelter in a den rather than someone having to go through the trouble of putting in new dens and crowding up more space.
So, in my opinion, I'd say just kind of take up refuge in an unoccupied den. It's a good idea and perhaps a separate application can be made for small families like this.
Hope this helped -Rea

I see no problem with this. The reason 5 members was set as part of the criteria to claim a den was for defense purposes. There would be too many individuals and smaller groups applying for dens if we allowed less. We want serious groups that intend on doing their best to defend the dens. I agree with what Real said. If you wish to claim a den, go to an unclaimed den (the list can be found on the inhabitants list under den applications) and live there...defend it if you can. Staff do den checks regularly during the day. If we happen to see that your family has defended a den for a week or two, then we'll permit you to apply for the den.

That's a pretty good plan Aiya. I remember staff used to do den checks way back when AWW was younger. But they stopped for a while, you guys starting that back up?

I think this is a bad idea.
Back to what Real said, in her first paragraph. A five member family could not possibly protect the den especially the female is nursing. Also you have to think about the male, are they strong enough to protect the family against a wolf? Or a saber? Probably not alone.
The only problem I see with them trying to claim a big den, is that they might get overthrown by a pack of wolves, or clan of sabers. Therefore, they would be right where they started looking for a place to live. Also, I do not think this idea is the best, because it would have Nark editing the dream to fit more dens, which means less space to roam if you are a lone wolf/saber/animal.
My last point would be, if a certain amount of small dens are made, and taken quickly, EVERYONE will be barking up Nark's tree to get their own den. But as I recalled, you may purchase a small personal hideout when you donate 5GD to the dream package. Or 50GD for a personalized den.
In conclusion, I think it would just be best to donate to get a den, and it would not cause the above problems.
edit; Snowbound; I do not think they ever stopped den checks. I have seen emits from Nark warning people that she is doing den checks.

Alright, yeah I see the problems with that now =p We now have a big enough group of people now anyways, for a pack. So I guess it doesn't matter now.
But as you said about they would have it hard to defend, well in real life that's what happens and you have to take your chances. It only makes it more interesting, I'd say. But yeah, the space thing would probably be a problem and it might be a bit of work.

I think that if a few small dens are put in the dream, that only loners could take them over, and not a whole pack, or pride, as it wouldn't make since if a large pack lived in a small den.

If I'm not mistaken, that's what den three is for. In my honest opinion., if you want a loner den that badly, I think you should just buy it. I'm pretty sure that's why the option is there.

But you got to understand, some people dont have the money to buy dens. And den 3 isn't exactly for small families, its an OOC area too, if I remember correctly.

The OOC zone is the OOC area. Den three is an unclaimable den.

Def's right. Den 3 is still an IC area, but its public. You can't kick people out of it.

Yeah, but if a 'small family' was to live in it, they couldn't kick people out, or get any privacy. I still think the small den idea is a good idea.

Not all of the dens are claimed, though. People can hang out in an empty den without having to apply for it, the way people do when they're trying to get more packmembers to qualify.
